The names below were copied from an old ledger kept by Col. George Hairston, who operated a store at his estate, “Marrowbone,” in Henry County, Virginia. This plantation was situated on the Marrowbone River, near Martinsville. George Hairston (1750—1827) was a son of Robert Hairston and his wife, Ruth Stovall. Many papers relating to the Hairston family are kept at the Manuscripts Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An online Inventory of the Wilson and Hairston Family Papers, 1751-1928, also includes some digitized copies of family correspondence.
This list was transcribed by Mrs. Lillian Schwertz during a visit to the Hairston family, in Henry County, in the late 1950s. It was first published in Local History & Genealogical Society [Dallas, Texas], Vol. IV (November, 1958), No. 3, pp. 1-3.
