MARIA REED, born in Livingston County, New York, July 17, 1809; came to Lucas County [Ohio] with her father, E. H. Leming, September 2, 1815. Married Anson Reed, of Monclova, January 1, 1834. Had three children, one living. Mr. Reed was a sailor; he sailed on the Oliver Newbury. He was born in Lockport, New York, May 11, 1811. Mrs. Reed has carried on farming 40 years. She came when it was all woods and her nearest friends were Indians. When she first came to live here she had to walk five miles to get to school, through the woods, and the wolves howling on all sides. At one time she saw a man who had been killed and scalped by the Indians.
