Benjamin Stringfield Brittain, sheriff of Buncombe County, North Carolina (1817-1820), with his wife, Celia Vance. The couple married in Buncombe County on 20 May 1817. Benjamin S., the son of James Brittain and Delilah Stringfield, was born in Buncombe County in 1793 and died on 19 August 1864 in Cherokee County, North Carolina. Celia, the daughter of Col. David Vance and Priscilla Brank, was born in 1795 and died on 22 May 1879. Both were buried in Hanshaw Chapel Cemetery in Murphy, North Carolina.
