Ancestry of

HORACE CLARK SPAULDING

of Macoupin County, Illinois

The following is extracted from Reverend S. J. Spalding’s Spalding Memorial: A Genealogical History of Edward Spalding of Virginia and Massachusetts and His Descendants (published in Chicago in 1897).

FIRST GENERATION

[Pages 53-57]
EDWARD SPAULDING, died 26 Feb. 1670.

. . . From 1634 can clearly and distinctly be traced the first permanent settlement of Braintree, Mass. Previous to this time, those who came there were adventurers, who had neither sympathy nor interest with the civil or ecclesiastical ideas of the permanent settlers of the Massachusetts Colony; and it is probable that Edward and his family arrived about this time, or very soon afterwards.

It was in Braintree, Mass., where his first wife Margaret and his daughter Grace died, and where one of his children, Benjamin, was born. The following records from the town of Braintree were returned to the recorder in Boston, and are published in the Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. 3, p. 247:

“Benjamin the sonne of Edward Spalden, his wife, was born 7, (28), 1643. Grace the daughtr of Edward Spalden, His wife was buryed (3o), 1641. Margaret the wife of Edward Spalden dyed --- 1640.”

Edward Spalding was made a Freeman May 13, 1640, from which fact we know that he was a member of the established church of the Province; as no person could be made a Freeman, or be entitled to any share in the government, or be capable of being chosen a magistrate, or even of serving on a jury, who was not of someone of the churches established in the colony.

SECOND GENERATION

JOHN2SPAULDING (Edward1), born ca. 1631 - died 3 Oct. 1721, Chelmsford; married 18 May 1658, Concord, Mass., by Maj. Simeon Willard, to Hannah Hale (died 14 Aug. 1689). He left no will.

Also from page 60:

“He was the eldest son of Edward Spalding, and came to Chelmsford with his father about 1654. He was made a freeman March 11, 1689. In the Town Records, under date of Nov. 16, 1655, “John Spalding is granted a piece of upland, two acres more or less lying betwixt his Hous Lott & the Lott of Samuel Richardson.” Also, under the date of Jan. 7, 1659, “it is evidenssed that John Spalding hath the Swamp granted to him that lyes between his Lott and John Shepley’s Lott, provided he leaves a highway to the S’d Wamp for the Town to take of the wood & lumber.”

In 1683 the entry record of the Town grants of land to his use is entered as follows: ‘The Record of the Accommodation of Upland and Meadow granted by the Town of Chelmsford to John Spalding, with the Bounds and Butments of the same. His uplands first. One Hous Lott Seventeen acres more ore less Bounded by the lands of Isiah Richardson North; South by the land of John Shipley; West by the Town Commen.’ Also ‘12 acres on the South Bank of the Merrimack River; 9 acres lying on the Town Commen, & 6 acres in the Newfield.’ His meadow land was 2 ½ acres in the “River Meadow,” 2 ½ acres at “further Tadmuck,” 2 ½ acres at “Stony Brook;” and 6 ½ acres on the Town Highway, in all 58 acres.

There were also conferred on him, Jan. 29, 1696, “Six acres of Meadow, bounded easterly by Nesbanusek Pond.”

. . . In Hull’s Journal of the War expenses 1675 and 6, John Spalding is mentioned as a Soldier under Capt. Manning, in the war known as “King Philip’s War.”
